This image relates to my topic of fantasy as it shows Belle from Beauty and the Beast with a twist. I chose to include this image as it uses a classic well loved Disney film to address the social issue of abuse. What I like most about this is how the composition is filled with Belle central, but slightly tilted which shows how things in the image are not right, and also the thrown chair and lost shoe adds to the story giving indications to what the image is showing. I also like the use of colour as well, with the eye being immediately drawn to the red and yellow which stands out against the dull colours in the room.
I think the photographer took this to address the social issue of abuse. The most important part about this image is how the model is positioned, face down looking dishevelled and lifeless.
This image relates to my unit as it shows a twisted take on the story of Cinderella. What attracted me to this is how every aspect is carefully constructed and how although Cinderella is the subject, she is fairly small. In terms of how this image is constructed, what caught my eye was how the setting looks, with one shoe carefully positioned near the stair case which is typical of the classic story. I also really like the graffiti on the left wall which paired with the emptiness of the street gives an deserted, apocalyptic feel whilst also showing reference to the story in terms of the clock striking midnight and the magic vanishing. The other factor I like is how small Cinderella looks. This paired with the camera angle looking down on her makes her seem weak and insignificant, while her pose makes her look helpless.
I think the photographer took this to address the idea of drugs and alcohol.
The most important aspect of this is the setting, as if it was in a studio or somewhere less eerie looking it would not have the same effect.
This relates to the idea of fantasy as it shows the idea of fairies in the form of Tinkerbell. I chose to include this as I really like how colour is used to show the idea of Tinkerbell fading. The entire top half of the image is fading as the wings do which shows that she is dying. Although this is the case, there is a lot of light shining just on the model while she shields her eyes. This emphasizes the impression that she is dying - a reference to "looking towards the light". One thing I dislike about this image is the composition, with the model to off centre with a lot of empty space around her which would look better filled.
I think the photographer took this to show the idea of life fading and death.
What I think is the most important aspect is the colour fading.
This relates to my topic of fantasy as it shows the idea of a princess in a sort of hung over state. I chose to include this as I like how you cannot see her face and therefore her identity is anonymous leaving the viewer to wonder what happened and gives them the freedom to think about different scenarios. I really like how the pink stands out a lot against the dark, dirty setting emphasising her fairytale persona and increasing the contrast between it and the "real world". I also really like the composition with her legs and skirt coming across the top and centre half of the composition and with the cup and sign fill up the centre.
I think the photographer took this to show the contrast between reality and dreams.
I think the most important thing about this image is the sign as it addresses what is going on and tells the story more.
Influence
Although I got loads of ideas from looking at Thomas Czarnecki's work, my project took a different path, meaning I did not get to try out the different ideas I got from his work, therefore his work did not really influence my project unfortunately.
Summary
Although his work did not influence me for this particular project, I will continue to look at and learn from his work as it does inspire me, and hopefully it will influence me on a future project.
