Connecting Essays

Annie Leibovitz

These two images show a lot of similarities, and for the shoot that my image was from, Annie Leibovitz' work was a massive inspiration and influence. The first and most obvious similarity is that both are showing fairytale princesses. Although Leibovitz' image shows Snow White and mine does not have a specific princess the model is mimicking, the connection is still there. Another strong similarity in both pieces is that they are set in a forest area. This helps create more of a story and gives the image a more exciting look rather than if they were set in the studio. Both models are looking away from the camera as well. These poses look both natural due to the fact they are ignoring the camera, but false and dramatic as they look stiff and frozen rather than relaxed. The contrast and colours are also similar, with high contrast and bright whites paired with some desaturation give the images a mystical, surreal effect. Overall, these two images share a lot of similarities ranging from the editing technique to what has been shot.

 Viona Ielegems

Although these two images are very different in most ways, there are some strong similarities that connect them. First of all the subject. Viona Ielegems' image shows a sort of mythical creature whilst mine shows a morbid Queen of Hearts. Although these are strong differences both characters show are portrayed as strong, powerful female characters which is a strong connection. Another connection is how dark in tone both are. Both characters expressions show them as not to be reckoned with in different ways, and the vivid use of blood in both adds to the dark, gorey tone of the image. Another similarity is how destaurated the colours are, this is more evident in Viona's image where there is evident use of sepia tones, however my image is also desaturated while keeping the red and greens vivid. Overall there are more differences than similarities between these two images but the similarities are so strong that they in some ways overpower the differences.

David Bailey

The most obvious connection between these two images is the fact they are taken to show fashion. This is evident through the models poses and the clothing and model being the only focus of the image. Another very obvious factor is that both of the images are in black and white. In the case of the David Bailey image, that majority of his work is in black and white and it is one of the factors that makes his work recognisable. In terms of the reason behind mine was because I wanted the image to seem more dramatic and have a slightly classic, vintage feel to it to show the outfit off. The poses shown in the two images are also similar, with both models facing the background and turning back over their shoulder in quite a dramatic way. There are a lot of similarities between these two images, however the biggest difference is the composition of the models with my image showing more of the model and also the model does not fill the top half of the composition.

Terry Richardson

Although initially looking at these two images they look entirely different, there are a few similarities. The first one being that a ring flash was used for both images to get bright tones and minimal shadow - however there Terry Richardson image does show shadow on background due to how close the model is to the background. The ring flash gives a bright effect making colours vivid which worked well for my image and shows up the red well in the Terry Richardson image. Another similarity that is evident in both is similar poses. Both of the images show the models relaxed and not looking false, instead they look happy and like they are having fun which gives the overall image a happy, light feel. Although these are the only similarities, they are quite bold and are two factors in both which make a big impact on the overall image.

Rankin

The first and most noticeable similarity between Rankin's image and my own is the fact both are in black and white. This creates a more dramatic effect and makes the portrait seem more interesting, and makes the contrasts between shadow and light stand out more. Both image are fairly high contrast as well, with strong black and white extremities. Another strong similarity is the subject. Both are evidently blonde females, and both look similar in their pose. Both are looking straight at the camera and not posing as such, but looking more natural and relaxed. This creates a intimate feeling for both images as the models look comfortable and not like they are acting false. The composition is also very similar, with the portraits showing the both models to be exactly central and clearly the focus. The angle is straight on as well which puts them on the same level as the viewer, rather than the models being made to seem more powerful or weaker. There are some differences with these two image though, with my image having a higher contrast and due to the shadowy setting, more shadows are evident. The setting is another difference, with the forest setting making my image look busier, and the plain background and even light making Rankin's image look more polished and neat, emphasising the model as the subject even more.
